A Farm Full of Hearts: Updating You on Our Mares & Fillies
It’s been a season of growth, change, and more than a few exciting developments here at Bel Cavallo Farm. Life on a working farm moves fast, and we’ve been heads-down caring for our herd—but it’s long past time to bring you up to date on all the wonderful horses who call this place home.
We’ve also recently welcomed three additional team members to help with farm and barn care, and the timing couldn’t be better. Because our very first foal is on the way.
PantsOnFire: Our First Foal Sired by City of Light Is Due March 4
Pantsonfire, our sassy Irish mare in foal to City of Light, is due around March 4th—and as anyone who has laid eyes on her lately can see, she looks absolutely ready. She is glowing, round, and magnificent.
We’ve also already chosen who Pantsonfire’s next breeding partner will be. That announcement is coming soon, and we think you’re going to love it.
Mrs. S (Now Affectionately Known as Buttercake): Mage Baby Foal Due April 30
Our beloved Mrs. S—officially known as Buttercake around the barn these days, because she has simply earned it—continues to thrive with her Mage baby growing strong. She is due around April 30th, which has us doing some careful calendar math.
The Kentucky Derby falls on May 2nd this year, and Di has made it very clear to both Mrs. S and Baby Mage that they are absolutely not allowed to wait until Derby weekend to make their arrival. The farm is about an hour from Louisville, and showing up in a panic in the middle of America’s greatest race day is not the plan.
And yes, we’ve already decided who Mrs. S will be bred to next.
Bella Luna: On the Road Back
Our sweet Bella Luna, who came to us from the January Keeneland Sale, is currently on farm rest following a suspensory injury she sustained during training. A recent veterinary scan determined she needs an additional 60 to 90 days before returning to work.
If you could see the way she zooms up and down the hills of Bel Cavallo, you would have no doubt that she is feeling like herself again. She’s full of energy, full of spirit, and getting closer to the track every day. We’re taking it slow, because she deserves that care—but her future is bright.
Just Sea: A New Chapter
Our French filly Just Sea, known around the barn as Sea Sea, was in training when our veterinary team discovered a line in the knee bone. After careful consideration, we made the decision not to return her to racing. Her well-being simply matters more.
But her story is far from over—in fact, it’s just getting more interesting. Sea Sea will be bred to Carl Spackler, a Grade 1 Stakes Winner on the turf, this spring. Our little French mare is about to become a mother, and we couldn’t be more excited about what that future holds.
Looking Ahead
Bel Cavallo is fuller, busier, and more alive than ever. Two foals on the way. A filly on the mend. A French mare with a bright new future. And a team that is showing up every single day with everything they’ve got.
We are so grateful—for this community, for this farm, and for every horse who has trusted us to be their home. The best is absolutely still to come.
