Meet Our Three New Additions From January’s Keeneland Sale: Bella Luna, Pantsonfire & Just Sea

There’s a saying around Bel Cavallo Farm: when Doug goes to a sale, come home to surprises.

We say that with complete love and zero complaints—because somehow, every single time, he’s right.

How It Started

With Mogli settling in beautifully as Balu’s companion and Mrs. S already thriving as our first broodmare, we felt like we were in a wonderful place. The farm was coming together. The herd was growing. Life was good.

And then the January Keeneland Sale arrived.

Doug, along with our Broodmare and Barn Manager Lou Scholes, Marcelino, and Nancy, spent time carefully studying the sales catalog. They started with around 60 horses worth a closer look, narrowed the list to about 20, and went to Keeneland to preview them in person. Then Doug went to the auction—iPad and lists in hand—and came home with three.

Three.

Monday: Meet Bella Luna

The first call came Monday night. Doug needed a horse trailered home Tuesday morning. Not a broodmare in foal—a three-year-old racing and broodmare prospect named Bella Luna.

Unplanned. Too good to pass up.

Di picked her up Tuesday morning, and within moments, it was settled: Bella Luna is hers. An absolutely sweet filly by Good Magic—the same sire as Mage, a connection that felt immediately meaningful—out of Mighty Moon by Malibu Moon. She has a quiet confidence about her that’s impossible not to fall for.

Tuesday: Meet PantsonFire

Tuesday afternoon, another call. Another horse to pick up. This time: exactly what they’d been hoping for. A broodmare in foal.

Her name is Pantsonfire, a sassy Irish mare out of Sir Percy (GB), with a dam, Rubileo, by Galileo. She’s in foal to City of Light from Lane’s End Farm—an extraordinary match. Pantsonfire brought exactly the energy and pedigree that Bel Cavallo’s breeding program is being built around.

Wednesday: Meet Just Sea

And then, Wednesday morning, one more call. Another racing and broodmare prospect—this time a French filly named Just Sea, by Sea The Moon (GER) out of Just Little by Grandslam. Unraced, full of potential, and according to Di, she stepped right onto the trailer without a second thought.

At that point, Di noted she might just start a horse transport business on the side.

In the picture you’ll also see one of our newest team members Eric, who joined us to help with the horses and the barn.

A Barn Full of Purpose

In the span of a few days, Bel Cavallo went from a farm quietly coming together to a full, humming operation. The barn was officially at capacity, and the work—the beautiful, meaningful, exhausting work—was well and truly underway.

Bel Cavallo Farm and Don’t Blame Me Racing are no longer just a dream taking shape. They’re a full-time operation, with a barn full of extraordinary horses and a future that feels more exciting with every passing day.

We can’t wait to introduce you to each of them more fully as their stories unfold. Stay tuned—there’s so much more to come.
