Meet Mogli (Mo): A Retired Racehorse & New Friend for Balu

Some additions to the farm are planned carefully. Others just feel like fate.

Mogli (Mo) is one of those.

Balu, our beloved retired trotter and one of the gentle souls at the heart of Bel Cavallo, needed a companion. Anyone who knows horses understands how deeply they feel the presence—or absence—of a herd. Balu had been adjusting to life on the farm, but something was missing. He needed a buddy.

That’s where Mogli came in.

A Perfect Match from the Start

Mogli is an 8-year-old retired racehorse who had 10 starts during his career before finding his way to Second Stride, Inc., a wonderful organization dedicated to finding loving homes for horses in transition. When we learned about him, it was clear he was exactly what Balu needed—and exactly the kind of horse Bel Cavallo is built for.

From the moment he arrived, Mogli proved just how right that feeling was. He settled in immediately—eating, drinking, and rolling contentedly in his shavings as if he’d always lived here. Calm, easygoing, and completely at home from day one.

We decided to give him a new barn name to match his easy, adventurous spirit: Mogli. Just like the Jungle Book. It suits him perfectly.

Why This Matters to Us

Mogli’s arrival is about more than adding a horse to our herd. It’s a reflection of something we believe deeply at Bel Cavallo: that retired racehorses deserve soft landings and lives filled with peace, purpose, and companionship.

We’re grateful to Second Stride, Inc. for the incredible work they do connecting horses like Mogli with the right homes. Organizations like theirs make it possible for horses who’ve given so much on the track to find the care and dignity they deserve afterward.

Balu now has his buddy. Mogli has his forever home. And Bel Cavallo feels a little fuller, a little warmer, and a little more like everything we dreamed it would be.

Welcome to the farm, Mo. We have a feeling you’re going to love it here.
