Bel Cavallo’s First Foal Has Arrived: Meet PantsonFire and City of Light’s Colt
There are moments you prepare for.
And then there are moments that, no matter how much you’ve prepared, still take your breath completely away.
In the early hours of March 7th, shortly after midnight, Bel Cavallo Farm welcomed its very first foal.
He’s Here: Meet Our New Colt
Born to Pantsonfire (IRE) and sired by City of Light from Lane’s End Farm, this strapping colt arrived in the quiet of the night and immediately made his presence known. The vet came the following morning, and the report was everything we could have hoped for: happy, healthy colt and a healthy, happy mom.
He’s still getting used to those long, wobbly legs—which, honestly, is one of the most magnificent things to witness. And his whinny. We are not prepared to talk about his whinny without getting emotional.
For now, we’ve given him a barn nickname: Knickers. A little British humor, a nod to his mother’s name, Pantsonfire—and it suits him entirely.
What’s in a Name?
For those curious about how racehorses are officially named, here’s a little peek behind the curtain. A foal’s legal name in their first year is simply the year and the name of their dam—in this case, Pantsonfire 26. Once a horse reaches racing age at two, an official name can be registered with The Jockey Club, and that becomes their name for life.
Most breeders wait until a horse is a yearling before choosing that registered name, and there’s a thoughtful reason for that: if a horse is sold at a weanling or yearling sale, it’s a gift to the new owners to have the opportunity to name the horse themselves. For now, Pantsonfire 26—Knickers to his friends—has all the time in the world to grow into whoever he’s going to be.
A Dream Made Real
We have written many times about the vision behind Bel Cavallo Farm. About the barns we were building, the broodmares we were hoping for, the foals we were imagining. We have talked about what it would feel like to raise a horse from its very first moments on this land.
Now we know.
It feels like this. Like a colt finding his legs in the early morning hours on a farm built with love. Like a mama horse nuzzling her newborn. Like a dream that has finally, completely, arrived.
We are so proud, so grateful, and so ready for everything that comes next.
Welcome to the world, Knickers. Bel Cavallo has been waiting for you.
PS: Like proud new parents, we took plenty of pictures and couldn’t pick the best one to share. So here’s a bunch of them.
