Our Day at the TOBA Pedigree & Conformation Clinic

Since arriving in Kentucky, we’ve had the privilege of becoming involved with several outstanding organizations in the horse racing industry. One of the most impactful so far has been the Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (TOBA). Recently, we attended the Pedigree & Conformation Clinic held at the renowned Fasig-Tipton auction house in Lexington, and it was an experience worth sharing.

The clinic offered a deep dive into the multifaceted world of sales and breeding, with expert-led sessions covering every angle of the industry. With the October Sale in full swing, we had a front-row seat to observe how sellers meticulously prepare their prospects and how buyers evaluate potential champions. These horses truly represent the future of the industry, and witnessing the process firsthand gave us a new level of appreciation for the dedication and strategy behind each decision.

Throughout the day, we attended informative lectures and hands-on sessions led by experts from diverse fields. We learned about auction operations, the role of buyer’s agents, yearling preparation, equine nutrition, and the vital contributions of veterinarians in ensuring the health and readiness of sale prospects. Topics such as racing syndications and partnerships, state-level racing politics, equine law, and even groundbreaking advancements in stem cell research for tissue repair broadened our understanding of the industry’s scope.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was the opportunity to build connections with professionals across the industry. Whether sharing services, exchanging resources, or simply enjoying conversations about our shared passion, the generosity and openness of Kentucky’s equine community stood out. As we embark on building our farm and exploring breeding ventures at Bel Cavallo, these connections are invaluable.

Kentucky’s horse industry isn’t just about the horses—it’s about the people who make it all possible. Their knowledge, kindness, and willingness to support newcomers like us make all the difference. We feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such a welcoming community and look forward to applying what we’ve learned as we continue to grow and contribute to this remarkable industry.
